YOGA IS BENEFICIAL FOR ARTHRITIS

As a medical herbalist as well as well as a yoga instructor I see a lot of patients with arthritic symptoms and further on there is more info about this condition with some amazingly helpful remedies that can dramatically improve symptoms. The wonderful thing is that YOGA is so good for arthritis! Yoga reduces joint pain and joint stiffness as well as improving joint flexibility. The university of pennsylvania in Philadelphia studied the effects that yoga had on knee osteoarthritis and found that just 60 minutes of yoga for 8 weeks revealed significant improvement in all symptoms. The yoga poses were modified to accommodate the fact that the people with osteoarthritis may not be able to bend their joints as far as others.

Approximately 30% of Australians suffer from arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Arthritis is a painful condition where there is inflammation of the joints affecting the joint cartilage and surrounding musculoskeletal system. Most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Glucosamine and fish oil are the most commonly prescribed remedies which in 8 out of 10 people have results that vary between a marked improvement to no pain at all. Glucosamine helps to rebuild cartilage by providing the body with the nutrients it needs to help to re-create the damaged areas as well as being anti-inflammatory to the joints. Some formulas have Chondroitin in them and this acts like a cushioner in and around the joint space to help with the re-building. Some of the other natural alternatives which I find are more effective are:

  • Turmeric which contains curcumin
  • Devils Claw
  • Boswellia
  • Fish krill or flaxseed oils
